The Rutles in Mono is a box set that contains remastered versions of the mono versions of the original versions of the studio versions of the UK versions of 10 Rutle albums, along with a mono version of Vast Bastards, titled Mono Bastards. It released along side its stereo counterpart, The Rutles (For Those Who Know the Difference), which includes the full Rutles discography in stereo, along with other bonus inclusions.
Mono vs Stereo[]
At the time of the original releases of the Rutles early 60s albums, stereo was very new and mono was the standard, leading to poor use of the stereo. The Rutles were only present during the stereo mixing of their albums, which also led to lesser quality mixes. Stig O'Hara firmly stated in an interview that the Rutles had a complete understand of stereo at the time, and referred to the mono mixes as "piss". Although the stereo mixes have become the standard on CDs and streaming services, a group of enthusiasts who are referred to as "Peedophiles" (based on Stig's comment) vastly prefer the mono mixes, and high prices.
