Give Peas A Chance is the first solo song by Ron Nasty. On release it was credited as being written by Nasty/McQuickly, in respect of their established arrangement. It was released in 1969 as a single on Banana Records (Rutle Records), backed with the Chastity song "Remember Lunch".
Background[]
Ron Nasty had a friend in the field of science, who had been doing tests on vegetables, and found that peas were highly intelligent and could likely write a song. In reaction to this, Nasty and his second wife, Chastity, wrote this song on the topic. Video exists of Nasty telling his wife about his idea, which was included in the popular 2002 documentary The Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch.
Recording[]
Nasty had up to 50 people boarded up in a room, forced to sing the song, and the result was a kind-of hippie chorus. The song became highly popular, and is often regarded as a classic.
