4 is a compilation album by David Bowie, based on the Rutles' 1. It contains 27 of his hits and most popular songs. Bowie was bitterly fascinated by the Rutles' 1 at release, calling it a "piece of marketing extravagance" in The Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch. In the extended interview, he mentioned that he planned to release his own version of the idea, which became 4. It became the second best-selling album in the history of music, surpassed only by 1.
